Arrestee's Family Loses $1,700 In Will County Jail Scam
Two men called the arrestee's family and asked for more than $2,000 to "keep him out of general population" at the Will County Jail.
NEW LENOX, IL — An arrestee's family was reportedly scammed out of nearly $2,000 after a scam caller requested money, purportedly to keep him out of general population at the Will County Jail.
New Lenox police were called Aug. 26 to a home, where a person said they had gotten a call from two men claiming to be with the Will County Sheriff's Department.
The person's family member, a New Lenox resident, had been arrested on a domestic battery charge two days earlier, according to police reports.

The men on the phone asked for a $1,750 payment to keep the person's family member out of gen pop at the adult detention facility. The caller told the family member to deposit the money into a Bitcoin machine. The person did, and the caller then asked for another $1,250.
It was then they became suspicious of the callers' intent, and called police, according to authorities.
