St. Mary Catholic School Starts “Sandwich Patrol” to Feed the Homeless

St. Mary Catholic School students made over 150 lunches to help Catholic Charities and DayBreak Shelter in Joliet.

On Friday, November 15, 2024, the 8th grade students in Mrs. Tracy Cokinos’s Religion class at St. Mary Catholic School launched “The Sandwich Patrol”, a new club dedicated to making a meaningful impact by feeding those in need. Partnering with Dr. Michele Alday-Engelman, Fr. Dindo Billote, Fr. Sam Comforti, and their Prayer Parents, the students prepared 150 lunches for Daybreak Shelter in Joliet.
Stephanie Hook from Catholic Charities joined the students to share insights about food insecurities and the difference their efforts could make. The lunches, which included sandwiches made with bread generously donated by Fleckenstein’s Bakery, were assembled using food provided by the 8th grade families.
"The Sandwich Patrol" is open to students in grades 5-8 at St. Mary Catholic School. This initiative fosters a sense of service and compassion while providing students with opportunities to live their faith. The 7th grade students will be up next and will be continuing this mission of helping those in need.
Mrs. Tracy Cokinos, Religion teacher and club moderator, stated "The Sandwich Patrol allows our students to put their faith into action. By working together, they see how small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others.”
St. Mary Catholic School in Mokena provides students in preschool through 8th grade with a faith-based education that emphasizes academic excellence, service, and the Catholic faith.
