Young Rembrandts To Offer Summer Drawing Days June 20-23

The classes are for children ages 7-14 and will be held at Beggar's Pizza in New Lenox.

NEW LENOX, IL — Children between the ages of 7 and 14 who are interested in developing their drawing skills are invited to register for Young Rembrandts' Summer Drawing Days, scheduled for June 20-23 at Beggar's Pizza, 650 W. Maple St. in New Lenox.

During Summer Drawing Days, children will not only draw, but will also learn to color using colored pencils and chalk pastels, according to Tess Gutkowski, youth drawing director for Young Rembrandts Southwest Suburbs. All supplies will be provided to participants.

"Those are techniques that we can't do in the schools because they're messy," Gutkowski said. "So, it'll be totally different coloring techniques that the kids don't get to experience when we're doing the after-school activities."

Each day offers two sessions — one from 9 a.m. to noon, and the second from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each day will have a different themes for the children to focus on. Children in Gutkowski's Young Rembrandts classes helped choose the themes, which include zoo animals, secret gardens, birds of prey/peace, zoo-topia, Australian safari, ocean creatures, and anime manga.

Young Rembrandts is a parent-funded, after-school art enrichment program that is taught in more than 40 elementary schools throughout Will, Kendall and Grundy Counties, according to Gutkowski.

This will be the first time Gutkowski has offered Summer Drawing Days. Gutkowski started the program because she said that she felt there was a need for art instruction during the summer, when classes are not in session at the elementary schools.

The Summer Drawing Days will be taught by Gutkowski and former student turned instructor Averi Fier.

Registration cost is $50 per session and is open to anyone. A lunch menu will also be available to participants for an additional cost, Gutkowski said.
