Lew Blond Memorial Run/Walk For ALS Research Returns To Northbrook
The 24th annual edition is held in honor of Lew Blond, a beloved Maple applied sciences teacher who died in the year 2000 from ALS.
NORTHBROOK, IL — Every spring, the Northbrook community honors the legacy of Lew Blond, a beloved Maple School applied sciences teacher who died in the year 2000 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. The 24th annual Lew Blond Memorial Run/Walk returns to Northbrook this Saturday at Maple School.
Race proceeds benefit the Skokie-based Les Turner ALS Foundation; scholarships for local students pursuing studies in the applied sciences; and District 30 special projects.
According to Northbrook/Glenview School District 30, the race includes a U.S. Track and Field-certified 5K run/walk; a 1-mile run/walk; and the Little Lew 50-yard dash for ages 0-6, followed by an awards ceremony.

Other attractions include a vendor fair, music by the Maple School Jazz Band and a DJ, photo opportunities for families, and an online auction for prizes donated by local businesses.
Typically, 600 participants including parents and children from Maple, Wescott and Willowbrook schools, and community members take part. Les Turner ALS Foundation officials, race officials and volunteers who organize the event will also be on hand.

The starting line for the 5K and one-mile events are on Sherman Drive between Maple School and Glenbrook North High School. Parking available on the north side of Glenbrook North or at Highland Baking Company across Shermer Road.
The award ceremony will be held at the East Entrance of Maple School.
In addition, the Little Lew 50-yard dash for children is on the athletic fields, east of the school closest to Shermer Road.
The 5K race begins at 8 a.m.; one-mile race at 9 a.m.; Little Lew 50-yard dash at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $10 to $55 depending on race. A silent auction also available.
