NORTHBROOK, IL — Born and raised in Chicago, Dr. Jordana Eisenstein Rosen comes from a family that loves pets. With that, it's only natural that three members of her immediate family, including herself, are veterinarians.

Rosen recently opened a new business, Eisenstein Veterinary Services Urgent Care, inside PetSmart at 291 Skokie Blvd. in Northbrook. She called it part of the fulfillment of a "childhood dream."

"The saying is common among veterinarians. I know this is true for me, my sister and my niece," Rosen told Patch. "It is truly amazing to have other people at the dinner table to discuss topics that most others would find to be meal-ending."

EVS Urgent Care currently has two other locations — one in Chicago's South Loop and another can be found in Kissimmee, Florida. Rosen's niece, Dr. Danielle Eisenstein, is the lead veterinarian at the Florida location.

Rosen said life can be tough for pet parents these days due to limited appointment slots available at primary veterinarians. Sometimes, going to the emergency room is the only option.

"This is where EVS Urgent Care comes in. I built a team of professionals who felt the need for a change as well," Rosen said. "We are here to provide care for pets who need to be seen now, but are not experiencing a life-threatening emergency. Think ear/eye infections, itchy skin, vomiting, diarrhea etc. In short, all non-surgical emergencies. We are here to fill this gap in coverage."

At the age of 10, Rosen began volunteering at a humane society and knew right then she wanted to work with pets for a living. Early responsibilities included cleaning cages and walking dogs. As she grew older, her role expanded into basic medical care, as well as educating adopters on what it means to welcome a pet into their homes, according to Rosen.

In 2005, Rosen graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, before becoming a partner at a small animal hospital. She sold her practice in 2016 and began down the path that eventually led to the start of EVS Urgent Care.

Not every pet that visits EVS Urgent Care is in need of emergency care, but many are experiencing ailments that can be painful for our furry friends.

"When I think about a dog with an ear infection, or a cat with a urinary tract infection, they do not belong in the ER, but these are conditions that should be seen immediately to relieve these pets from unnecessary pain and discomfort," Rosen said.

In addition to in-house care, EVS Urgent Care also provides teletriage, or the screening of pet patients remotely to determine their condition and the care needed. This service is available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

Rosen said she and her staff have received a warm welcome from the local community, clients and even neighboring veterinarians in Northbrook and at the other locations. The business has even adopted a tagline, #WeAreTheChange.

"Everyone who is a part of EVS family feels that we are going to lead this movement of changing the narrative of the veterinary profession," Rosen said. "We all want this profession to once again be beloved by those who are in it, as well as those who need it."
