Northbrook's Compher Notches Assist In Olympics Debut
The U.S. Olympic women's ice hockey team began play Thursday with a 5-2 win over Finland in the preliminary round in Beijing.

BEIJING — It was a special debut for Northbrook native Jesse Compher Thursday at the 2022 Winter Olympics. The 22-year-old assisted Kendall Coyne Schofield on the U.S. Olympic women's ice hockey team's third goal in a 5-2 win over Finland in a preliminary round game in Beijing.
Coyne Schofield, of Palos Heights, scored with 14 minutes, 28 seconds left in the second period on an assist from Compher and Cayla Barne. Coyne Schofield scored again 64 seconds later for a U.S. team attempting to repeat as Olympic gold medal winners. Finland won the bronze medal at PyeongChang 2018.

Compher also had four shots on goal in the game. She is a 2017 graduate of Glenbrook North High School. Her brother, J.T. Compher, plays for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League.
Compher and Coyne Schofield are two of five Chicagoland athletes on the women's hockey team, including Savannah Harmon, of Downers Grove, Abbey Murphy, of Evergreen Park and Megan Bozek, of Buffalo Grove. Harmon and Murphy are also first-time Olympians.

Compher, who plays forward, is listed at 5-foot-8 inches, 150 pounds on the official team roster. She played collegiate hockey at Boston University. She represented the United States at the IIHF Women's World Championships in 2019 and 2021.
Next up for the women is another preliminary game Saturday versus Russian Olympic Committee. The game will be broadcast live at 7:10 a.m. on USA Network.
