NORTHBROOK, IL — When a group of local women wanted a way to serve the Northbrook community 25 years ago, they started with the idea of a not-for-profit home décor and consignment shop.

Now, 25 years later, that effort has led to an ongoing community treasure that has donated more than $3.4 million in grants to local organizations to help provide food, shelter, and other services to Northbrook neighbors in need.

Village Treasure House has done so through the efforts of more than 100 volunteers, who have worked at the shop since it opened in 1997.

“In the beginning, no one realized what a difference our mission could make in so many lives,” Kim Blake, the organization’s co-president said in a news release.

Village Treasure House currently distributes grants twice a year to several local agencies providing essential services to those in need.

Representatives from Village Treasure House say that the 25-year milestone would not be possible without the support and patronage of consignors, customers, and donors. Village Treasure House recently held Customer Appreciation Days, recognizing the village of individuals who support the mission of the shop.

They said that Treasure House’s unique position in our community and its commitment to its mission has contributed to helping those in need and that the commitment to the mission will allow the shop to continue to support those in need for years to come.

Lisa Hanneman, the director of Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook said the contributions over the years have been invaluable.

“What an incredible legacy you all have made possible in 25 years —touching so many organizations and, as a result, countless lives,” Hanneman said in the news release. “You have created an avenue for everyone in our community to do good and give back with your incredible model.”
