Elmhurst Native John Caluwaert: Attorney, Magician, and Two-Time Merlin Award Winner

OAK BROOK, Ill. — John Caluwaert has spent decades practicing law, but it is his passion for magic that often leaves audiences amazed. A respected business attorney and two-time Merlin Award winner from the International Society of Magicians, John has built a reputation for creating moments of wonder.
An Unexpected Spark from Muhammad Ali
Born and raised in Elmhurst and now living in Oak Brook, John’s path into magic began in the late 1970s while managing heavyweight champion Leon Spinks. During that time, he met Muhammad Ali, who performed a quick magic trick that sparked John’s lifelong fascination with the art. Encouraged by Ali, John began practicing and later trained under professional magicians to refine his skills.

A Style Rooted in Connection

A Fixture in Chicagoland Venues
His performances have spanned restaurants, hotels, and private venues. For more than a decade, he has been a regular feature at The Drake Hotel Oak Brook’s Sunday brunches. He also shares his talent with senior living communities, where his lighthearted illusions bring joy and laughter to residents.
Honors and Heartfelt Reactions
John has twice earned the prestigious Merlin Award, often called the Oscar of the magic world. Still, he says the most meaningful recognition comes directly from his audiences. “Sometimes the responses make my eyes water,” he shares. “It feels like I’ve really touched people.”
Magic as a Gift for Today’s World
While continuing his law practice, John sees magic as a much-needed gift in today’s world. “Magic gives people a break from reality,” he says. “It’s an enchantment of itself; something that lets us enjoy life for what it could be.”
