New Trauma Program Opens in Oak Brook

New Compass Health Center Trauma Program Address Growing Demand for Trauma-Focused Care in Illinois' Western Suburb

Oak Brook, Illinois, August 15, 2022- Compass Health Center’s Oak Brook location is expanding its services with the launch of new Trauma Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) mental health programs for young adults and adults on August 29, 2022. In 2021, Compass recorded a 25% increase in demand for trauma treatment at its Chicago, Northbrook, and Virtual locations, as well as a growing need for trauma-focused, intensive behavioral health programs in the Western suburbs.

According to an article published by the National Library of Medicine, “Exposure to traumatic events is not rare, as has been consistently found in epidemiological studies. The World Mental Health Surveys of adults were carried out among nearly 70,000 participants from 24 countries ranging in economic status from low to high. This data showed that at some time in their life 70.4% of the respondents had experienced at least one type of traumatic event. The specific rates were: 14% had experienced intimate partner or sexual violence, 34.3% accidents or injuries, 22.9% physical violence, 13.1% war-related events, 34.1% the unexpected or traumatic death of a loved one, and 35.7% experienced traumas that happened to loved ones (e.g., serious illness of a child).”

"Compass Oak Brook’s new Trauma Program is helping serve more patients in need of trauma care in order to meet our community’s demand. Led by psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and specialized trauma clinicians with diverse clinical backgrounds, our evidence-based treatment model supports young adults and adults by building the skills necessary to manage their symptoms and realign with their values.” said Kerry Lusignan, LCSW, Chief Clinical Officer, Compass Health Center – Oak Brook.

At Compass, each patient receives an individualized treatment plan which includes a full psychiatric evaluation, group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, experiential therapies, and ongoing reassessments and modifications to care as needed. Treatment modalities include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help individuals whose symptoms are impacting daily life and who may need more support than available in once-a-week outpatient therapy.

Seeking PHP/IOP-level treatment for trauma can help an individual learn the tools needed to heal and empower them to move forward in a direction that is aligned with their values and goals. It is time to seek treatment if an individual: experiences frequent, upsetting thoughts; is unable to control actions; fears that they may hurt themself or others; or experiences symptoms that prevent them from engaging in their typical functioning.

About Compass Health Center and Compass Virtual

Compass was founded by experienced child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrists Dr. David Schreiber, MD, and Dr. Claudia Welke, MD when they recognized the need for patient-centered, comprehensive, non-hospital based psychiatric care in the Chicago area.

While working together on a hospital inpatient unit, Dr. Schreiber and Dr. Welke realized that there were not enough programs to treat the children they saw in behavioral health crises. As a result, children were being placed on long wait lists, resulting in ER visits that would lead to admission for inpatient care. Dr. Schreiber and Dr. Welke realized that with the proper resources in place, many of these ER visits and inpatient hospitalizations could have been avoided and replaced with a level of care that was timelier, more appropriate, less costly, and had better outcomes.

In 2011, Compass Health Center opened its doors to serve children, adolescents, young adults, and adults. Since then, Compass has served many thousands of patients each year, expanding to new regions, opening new specialty care offerings, and steadily expanding the variety of patients treated.

Compass's multidisciplinary treatment team consists of 48 Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, and 450 master-level clinicians. Areas of focus include Depression, Anxiety, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, Trauma, PTSD, Mental Health, Pain, and Illness, Child Dysregulation, Substance Use, and School Avoidance. Compass treats patients ages 5 through adulthood in an age-appropriate setting within child, adolescent, young adult, and adult programs. Compass has locations in Chicago, Northbrook, Oakbrook and Virtual.
