Fire Destroys Oak Forest Bowl, Iconic Business 'A Total Loss'

A fire at Oak Forest Bowl burned for hours early Saturday, leaving the building in ruins.

OAK FOREST, IL — A large fire consumed south suburban bowling alley Oak Forest Bowl in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 6.

The fire started at 2:30 a.m., and was still burning just before 6 a.m. Multiple departments were at the scene fighting the blaze at 15240 S. Cicero Ave. After hours burning, the roof collapsed and little remained of the structure. The main entrance still stands, the walls around it charred.

Initial reports indicate the fire may have started in the adjacent outdoor area, and quickly spread to the rest of the building.

Drone footage depicts smoke visible overhead for more than a mile, and crews fighting the blaze from above. Photos from the scene show the interior lit by flames.

The building was empty when crews arrived; no injuries have been reported. Approximately 12 other towns assisted Oak Forest crews with battling the blaze.

“The fire is out for the most part," Deputy Fire Chief Steve Griffin said Saturday around 7 a.m. "Once we get these small spots out, we will begin an investigation as to how the fire started.

"Unfortunately, the building is a total loss."


Oak Forest police and the state fire marshal were at the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known, Oak Forest Police Chief Jason Reid told Patch via email.

The bowling alley has been in operation for decades, owned by the Tadevich family, most recently Keith Tadevich. In addition to 32 bowling lanes, the business also offers food and drink at Jake's Pub and Grill. Outdoor recreation area The Park hosts sand volleyball leagues six nights a week, as well as several bean bag leagues.

As fans woke to the news of the fire, many shared memories and reflections on the business.

"This is devastating," Shannon VonderHaar shared on social media. "I grew up here three nights a week and Saturday mornings. My parents met here. My first job was here. My sisters play volleyball here. I am heartbroken.

"Sending so much love and virtual bear hugs to my bowling family and the staff and owners."

Jennifer Morrissey-Cooper remembered her family's time in leagues at the alley.

"That is so sad!" she said. "Our family has been on leagues there. My husband and I played volleyball there. Terrible loss."

The Oak Forest-Crestwood Area Chamber of Commerce offered condolences to owner Keith Tadevich.

"Just devastating and a loss for words," the chamber wrote on social media. "Oak Forest Bowl and The Park has been a family tradition and staple in our town. The most generous community supporters. Keith—please know we are here to help in any way we can."
