OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN, IL — On Memorial Day and the days leading up to it, Americans from across the country will gather at cemeteries and memorials to honor and remember the service members who sacrificed everything in defense of our nation and freedoms.

Oak Lawn and Hometown will be participating in a nearly 160-year tradition honoring members of the armed forces who lost their lives in service to their country on Memorial Day, which this year falls on Monday, May 26.

Oak Lawn

Residents, veterans and active military will start gathering at 10:30 a.m. by the Oak Lawn Veterans Memorial, 9427 S. Raymond Ave. (95th Street @ Raymond Avenue), behind the library, where Johnson-Phelps VFW Post 5220 will be leading the ceremony.

The ceremony includes remarks by local elected officials, and laying of wreaths by various veterans groups. Guests include Mayor Terry Vorderer, a combat Vietnam veteran, the Ladies Auxiliary of Johnson-Phelps VFW Post 5220, Disabled American Veterans, Purple Heart Veterans and the Swallow Cliff chapter of the Illinois Daughters of the American Revolution.

The ceremony concludes with the playing of Taps and a 21-gun salute by VFW members.
Coffee and pastries follow immediately at VFW Post 5220, 9514 S. 52nd Ave.

“I extend an invitation to all to pay their respects to the men and women who have given their lives in all our past wars to protect our country,” Mayor Terry Vorderer said.

Hometown

The City of Hometown at 11:11 a.m. Monday by the Patterson Park flame (Main Street and Pulaski Road).

Refreshments will be served at the Hometown-Murray VFW Post 9773, 9092 Main St. Bring your DD214 and be eligible for a FREE lifetime membership.
