Oak Lawn Public Library Prepares For Second Annual Adult Spelling Bee
Local spellers will pit their spelling skills against other area residents for bragging rights at the second annual competition October 7.

OAK LAWN, IL — Local letter lovers who are looking to put their spelling skills to the test will have the opportunity to do that against fellow competitors as the Oak Lawn Public Library is preparing for its second annual adult Spelling Bee.
The competition will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 7, at the Oak Lawn Public Library, which is located at 9427 Raymond Ave. The day will begin with a skills test at 1 p.m. when the top 20 scores will advance to the spelling bee that will determine the area’s top speller in the competition, organizers said.
Words selected from lists used by the Scripps National Spelling Bee will be used in addition to words that are submitted by Oak Lawn Public Library patrons. Members of the community are encouraged to submit words for the competition by clicking here until Oct. 7. Same-day submissions will also accepted at the library’s adult services desk, organizers said.

“Lots of the people who signed up to compete did so to get over some bad memories of spelling bees from when they were kids—they wanted to prove to themselves they could do it,” Programming Librarian Kate Donley said in a news release. “We loved being able to inspire our adult patrons to challenge themselves, so we knew we had to bring back the bee in 2023.”
The winner of the competition will leave with a champion’s crown (or tiara) as well as bragging rights that go along with the title of Oak Lawn adult spelling bee champion.
