Cincinnati Reds Pick Up Orland Park Catcher Matt McCormick

The Reds this week picked up left-handed slugger and catcher Matt McCormick, a St. Laurence graduate.

ORLAND PARK, IL — The Cincinnati Reds picked up Orland Park catcher Matt McCormick this week in the 40th round of the MLB draft.

Left-handed hitter McCormick is a 2019 graduate of St. Laurence High School in Burbank. McCormick has been recruited by West Virginia University.

He was named the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year in 2018 when he led St. Laurence to a 30-8 record in the Chicago Catholic League Blue conference while he hit .510 with 9 home runs and 50 RBIs.

McCormick has been a First Team All-State honoree, an MLB Pipeline’s Top 20 player in the Tournament of the Stars event, and a Prep Baseball Report player of the year, and he has been chosen multiple times as an Chicago Tribune All-Area selection.

He also has volunteered as a youth mentor and has raised funds for pediatric cancer causes.
