ORLAND PARK, IL — The Darvin Furniture store at 154th and La Grange in Orland Park played a big role in moving families affected by domestic violence out of the Crisis Center for South Suburbia's emergency shelter and into other housing amid the coronavirus pandemic. The move was necessary, the Crisis Center said, because while the shelter offers families their own bedrooms, there are many common areas, including bathrooms, that would make it difficult to adhere to social distancing necessities.

Darvin "provided desperately needed mattresses" for the families moving into new apartments, according to the Crisis Center. Thirteen mattress sets were on the way with "just one day notice," and offered at a "hugely discounted" price.

The local charitable group Gifts for Hope provided the funding for what was charged for the mattresses. Kitchen items for the departing families were provided by the Kitchen Witches, a group of volunteers in Palos Heights.
