I am a former home health care worker with over 10 years of experience in wound care, physical therapy, and hemodialysis for a quadriplegic patient. Currently, I am a Board Member of District 135, participating in many events across the 10 schools. I serve as a Girl scout leader, collaborating with our Unit team to organize and facilitate events for our local troops. Additionally, I actively volunteer with various nonprofit organizations and organize inspirational speaking to motivate and support our youth.
Previous or current elected or appointed office*
My first term is coming to an end and I remain hopeful to serve a second term.
The most pressing issues facing our district are _______, and this is what I intend to do about them.
I prefer to view challenges as opportunities for growth. We are in the process of completing the initiatives outlined in our Strategic Plan, a collaborative effort that involved administration, staff, board members, and over 100 community members. This foundation has already had a positive impact on the culture within the district and enhanced our community outreach and student opportunities. The goal is to maintain and build upon this momentum. A copy of the plan can be found on the District 135 website for access by all stakeholders.
What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
It takes time to truly acclimate to a role, build relationships within the district, and establish trust with community members. I have worked hard to create those relationships, even when they involve tough conversations, because I believe in working for the greater good. I hope to continue serving as a strong, honest voice for taxpayers, ensuring their concerns are heard, and always advocating for community. My approach is one of respect, accountability, and a deep commitment to the success of all our students.
If you are a challenger, in what way has the current board or officeholder failed the community or district?
I am an incumbent, seeking election for my second term. I am very proud of our accomplishments. We were 1 of 46 to earn the Illinois of Association of School Boards 2024 School Board recognition designation. This recognition is designed to acknowledge those school boards that have engaged in activities and modeled behaviors that led to excellence in local school governance in support of quality public education.
Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform.
My platform can be summed up one sentence.
We move forward together, it isn't about my way, it's about our way.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
I would like to take a moment to remind everyone that the qualifications to serve as a school board member are relatively few, and it's never too late to get involved in your local government. It's about having a servant's heart. This role is less about specific technical expertise, but more about representation and the intrapersonal skillset that person possesses. As a board, our goals are to provide accountability, remain a microphone for voices, and make decisions that are data driven, while being fiscally responsible & student focused.
In my opinion, to reach the above goals there are two essential qualities that make an effective board member: the ability to listen respectfully and professionally to differing opinions, and a strong commitment of time. In any role, showing up, putting in the hard work, and having the courage to ask tough questions are critical to making a difference.
With 10 schools in our district, a consistent and engaged board presence is vital to creating a lasting impact that connects. I have demonstrated my dedication by being actively involved throughout our district- whether it's volunteering with the PFE for school events, attending student award ceremonies and graduations, representing our board as a delegate, or engaging in professional development, I show up. I consistently respond to emails from stakeholders, addressing concerns or hearing suggestions to further build positive connections within the community. My commitment to listening, engaging, and taking action is what drives my ongoing dedication as a District 135 school board member.
Why should voters trust you?
As I seek your support for another term, I want to reflect on the trust I have worked hard to build and the progress we've made together during my first term. My commitment to fostering strong, positive relationships with all stakeholders has been the heart of my work. I have made myself readily available to listen, discuss concerns, and address any issues directly, always ensuring that voices are heard.
Throughout my tenure, I have maintained the utmost respect for privacy and sensitive matters while actively working as a microphone for the diverse voices in our community. I understand that each perspective is valuable, and I have strived to ensure that every concern or suggestion had been given thoughtful attention and respect.
If you win this position, what accomplishment would make your term in office a success?
My leadership has been grounded in honestly and transparency. Whether discussing new initiatives or considering potential changes, I have always been open about my ideas and those ideas I represent, and work collaboratively to ensure we make the decisions that are well informed, data driven, and to benefit everyone.
Should cell phones be banned during school? Why or why not?
Ultimately, it's about finding a middle ground that prioritizes both the well-being of our students and the practical needs of modern life. Cell phone use in schools has become a significant topic of discussion, and it's clear that there are both pros and cons to consider.
We can all likely agree that cellphones allow early exposure to certain social media platforms that can have a negative impact on a child's mental health. Cellphones have also become a tool to use in bullying.
However, we live in a world where most children, by the age of 8, have some form for phone.
As parents, we understand the importance of staying connected with our children. A cellphone provides an easy way of communication and ensures we can reach them if necessary, particularly during emergencies.
In our school district we have a policy that is "Off and Away", but not banned from grounds.
What guidance should staff be given for dealing with potential ICE enforcement at schools?
Our district always has and will continue to follow district procedures and guidelines when it comes to outside agencies paying an unannounced visit to school to see or interact with students. Should, for example, DCFS, the police, or any other agency show up to a school in our district inquiring about students, there are procedures in place that focus on student safety and confidentiality. District 135 prioritizes the safety and well-being of students & staff.
How do you feel about sex education being taught in school? Should an LGBTQ component be included, and why or why not?
In Illinois' public school system, especially at the K-8 level, it is essential that sex education is both age-appropriate and grounded in scientific accuracy. The curriculum focuses on essential topics as anatomy, personal growth, and self care, these are critical components for healthy development. Our approach is transparent, we offer parents the opportunity to review the curriculum for (all students) at (all grade levels) and/or opt their child out, if they so choose. Our district's goal is to meet the diverse needs of all students, recognizing that each child is unique.
When it comes to student achievement, what are schools within this district doing well and what needs to be improved? How can those improvements be made?
In our district, schools are actively aligning with our strategic plan through a variety of targeted initiatives aimed at improving student achievement. Teachers continue to work diligently to pilot new curriculums, collaborate across schools within the district, and engage in ongoing professional development. We have increased access to resources, completed numerous facility upgrades, and remain focused as we build upon this strong foundation and continue to drive improvement in student achievement district-wide.
Is there any reason you would not serve your full term of office, other than those of health or family?
If you will have me, I am prepared and willing to offer another 4 years to the community.
