ORLAND TOWNSHIP, IL — The consolidated election is April 1, and Orland Township leadership will inevitably see a shakeup.

Three separate slates will vie for Township spots including supervisor, clerk, highway commissioner, and trustee. Twelve candidates are jockeying for four trustee spots.

Incumbent Orland Township Supervisor Paul O'Grady and his Orland Township Together slate includes clerk candidate Reem Odeh, highway commissioner candidate John Lynch (a current trustee), and trustee candidates Michael Maratea (incumbent), Kristin Hawksworth, Patrick Feldner (incumbent), and Marie Fuesel.

For the Orland Township United slate, current Orland Township Assessor Rich Kelly tops the ticket as supervisor candidate, with incumbent clerk Cindy Murray, current highway commissioner Antonio Rubino for assessor, Tracy Sullivan for highway commissioner, and trustee candidates Michael Schofield, Lena Matariyeh, Danny Flores, and Kelly Metzger.

Several declared Republican candidates are trying for spots, as well. Appearing as Republican candidate for clerk is Shannon Olson. Competing for highway commissioner is Republican candidate William Brennan. Republican candidates Kenneth Duffy, Frank Williams, Kenneth Soltis, and Matthew Keane, Jr. will also contend for trustee spots.

I am the Fire Chief for the Orland Fire Protection District. With over four decades of experience in fire service and emergency response, I have dedicated my career to protecting and serving the community.

The most pressing issues facing our township are _______, and this is what I intend to do about them.

The most pressing issues facing our township are fiscal responsibility, public safety, and community services. I intend to address them by ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used efficiently, advocating for resources to support emergency services, and expanding programs that directly benefit residents, particularly seniors and working families.

What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

My extensive leadership experience in public service sets me apart. I have managed large budgets, coordinated emergency operations, and worked closely with labor organizations to improve working conditions.

If you are a challenger, in what way has the current board or officeholder failed the community (or district or constituency)?

I believe there is room for stronger leadership and greater transparency in how township resources are managed.

Supporting first responders and emergency services

Strengthening township programs for seniors and working families
Advocating for responsible financial management and government transparency
Enhancing public safety initiatives to address crime and community concerns

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

As Fire Chief, I have successfully managed multimillion-dollar budgets, led emergency response efforts, and worked with local, state, and federal agencies to improve public safety. My leadership experience demonstrates my ability to handle complex challenges and make decisions that benefit the community.

Why should voters trust you?

I have spent my entire career serving this community with integrity, accountability, and dedication. My commitment to public service, combined with a proven record of leadership, ensures that I will prioritize the needs of Orland Township residents.

If you win this position, what accomplishment would make your term in office as a success?

A successful term would mean improving fiscal efficiency, expanding essential township services, and ensuring that public safety resources are strong and well-supported.

What are your views on fiscal policy, government spending and the handling of taxpayer dollars in the office you are seeking?

Government spending should be transparent, and investments should directly benefit residents through essential services, public safety, and community programs.

What are your thoughts on the crime rate in your community, and what more can be done to combat crime — especially violent crime — in town?

Public safety is a top priority. We must remain proactive in addressing crime. I will work to support law enforcement and emergency responders, advocate for crime prevention programs, and encourage community engagement initiatives to enhance safety.

What is your view of the city's/village's approach to commercial and residential development?

We need to ensure that commercial and residential growth aligns with infrastructure improvements and community needs.

When it comes to development, what are some key areas for improvement or additions you feel are most wanted by residents? What will need to be done to make this happen?

We need to focus on attracting businesses that provide stable jobs and essential services while ensuring residential developments are sustainable and meet community needs.

Is there any reason you would not serve your full term of office, other than those of health or family?

No.

I am a lifelong resident of Orland Township, a dedicated public servant, and a leader who understands the importance of accountability and community engagement. My experience in managing large teams, overseeing budgets, and responding to emergencies has prepared me to serve effectively as an Orland Township Trustee. I am committed to making a positive impact and ensuring that our township continues to thrive.
