First grade students across Orland Park had an unforgettable experience this spring. Tuesday, at Center School, firefighters from Truck Co. 1 rolled up to their school with a fire engine, complete with a towering ladder and rescue basket, to mark the culmination of the Adopt A Firefighter program.

Throughout the school year, the Orland Park Fire Department has been visiting first grade classrooms as part of this unique educational partnership. The Adopt A Firefighter program pairs classes with local firefighters, who teach students about fire safety, emergency preparedness, and the important role firefighters play in the community.

Tuesday's visit was the grand finale. Wide-eyed and full of excitement, students watched as the ladder extended into the sky and got a close-up look at the equipment used in real emergencies.
"We're so grateful for the Orland Park Fire Department and their commitment to our students," said Center School Principal Lindsay Reipsa. "The kids have learned so much and built lasting connections with their adopted firefighters."
