The Orland Park Public Library, 14921 S. Ravinia Ave., is thrilled to announce the arrival of a special springtime project: Hatching baby chicks. This educational experience gives patrons of all ages the opportunity to witness the fascinating journey of life, from egg to adorable chick.

The library received fertilized eggs from The Children’s Farm in Palos Park on Wednesday, March 26. The eggs were placed in a temperature and humidity-controlled incubator, where they will remain for 21 days as the chicks develop. To ensure proper growth, the eggs are carefully turned every 45 minutes, just as a mother hen would, with the incubator’s automatic turning function. Eggs are marked with an “X” on one side and an “O” on the other, making it easy to keep track of the turning process.

As the eggs near hatching, patrons may notice them gently rocking which is a sign that the chicks are ready to make their debut. Using a special tooth-like structure called an egg tooth, the chicks will slowly peck their way out of their shells. Once hatched, the baby chicks will be transferred to a warm and cozy brooder, where they will continue to grow under the heat of a heat plate.

This heartwarming project is not only educational but also a celebration of spring and new beginnings. While the library will be sad to say goodbye, the chicks will eventually return to The Children’s Farm to enjoy life alongside their fellow farm animal friends.

“The incubator is on the counter behind the YS desk, and hopefully in 21 days we will have some fluffy li'l babies peeping up a storm!” said Preschool Services Coordinator Stephanie Theriault.
