Man Steals Car After Victim Left Keys In Men's Locker Room: Cops

According to police, a 22-year-old Flossmoor man turned himself into police just hours after stealing a man's car from Lifetime Fitness.

ORLAND PARK, IL — A Flossmoor resident turned himself into police Thursday after officials said they obtained video footage which showed the 22-year-old taking a man's car from Lifetime Fitness in Orland Park.

A gym member at Lifetime Fitness's 16333 La Grange Road location called police after he said he left his car keys on a bench in the men's locker room at the fitness club. When he went to get his keys, he told officials, he found both his keys and car were gone.

Surveillance footage from the parking lot outside the gym showed Tauhid Thompson, 22, walk into Lifetime Fitness at around 5 p.m. and leave shortly after, getting into the man's car and driving away.

According to officials, Thompson later went back to the gym in the stolen car. This time, Thompson brought another person with him who helped him retrieve the vehicle he left behind earlier in the day.

By 9 p.m. Thursday, Thompson had turned himself into a police station. Officials did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment on why Thompson turned himself in or how he knew police were searching for him.

Thompson appeared in court on Friday where he was released on his own recognizance. He faces a felony charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
