ORLAND PARK, IL — Driving in Orland Park — or almost any other south suburban village? Watch your speed. Police will be participating in Illinois Speed Awareness Day Wednesday.

Illinois Speed Awareness Day aims to prevent deaths and reduce injuries that are a result of excessive speeding. It is sponsored by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee and Families Against Chronic Excessive Speeding.

Statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation in 2017 are sobering:
• There were 311,679 crashes involving motor vehicles.
• 93, 517 people were injured, and 1,090 people lost their lives.
• Crashes involving speed accounted for 33.2 percent of overall crashes, 36.2 percent of fatal crashes, and 37.9 percent of injury crashes.
• The total estimated cost of crashes in Illinois was $8.1 billon.
