Orland Park’s “Dogout” ideal for man’s best friend

A day at the park will leave 'em dog-tired

As the dog days of summer approach, the “Dogout” dog park at Centennial Park, 15600 West Ave., in Orland Park, is an ideal place to bring your dogs for fresh air, exercise and some canine camaraderie.

Open to members only, the baseball-themed park, features separate areas for large and small dogs, agility equipment, doggie drinking fountains, shaded areas, and open space for play.

“The park helps dogs socialize with other dogs,” said Pat Gira, Orland Park Trustee and chair of the Recreation Committee when the park opened. “The concept started with the ‘Bark for your Park’ online contest. Orland Park didn’t win, but we still built the park and it seems like the members are really enjoying it.”

Dog owners who are residents of Orland Park or Orland Township can get a membership for $25 for the first dog and $10 for each additional dog. Because Orland Township contributed funds to help build the park, township residents qualify for in-district membership rates, as well. The non-resident rate is $80 for the first dog and $15 for each additional dog. The membership term runs from Aug. 1 through July 31

All dogs using the park must have current vaccinations and proof is required at the time of registration. “The dog flu that was going around was hard for the park, but it’s over. Only dogs with proper vaccinations are allowed to join. We regulate it and it’s safe for dogs to mix with other dogs,” Gira said.

After a day at the Dogout, most pooches are dog-tired and Orland Park resident Janet Polson can attest to that. “It was awesome,” said Polson, whose dogs, Jake and Kirby, frequented the park. “Jake would run and run and just keep bringing the ball to us to throw. He’d play catch until his legs fell off. Kirby, who hates exercise, just followed the pack. Our boys loved it and we got to know all the other dogs and owners on the big-dog side.”

Park rules state food of any kind, including dog treats are not allowed inside the fenced area, and all dog handlers must be at least 16 years of age and be present at all times. Plus, children five and under are not permitted in the off-leash area and puppies must be at least four months old to use the park.
