ORLAND PARK, IL — A rabid bat was found near Orland Park late last month, officials said Monday.
The bat was found Aug. 30, and was determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory, Orland Park police said. Officials have not said where specifically the bat was found.
Residents are reminded to keep dogs, cats, and ferrets on a leash when outside the home. All animals should be current on rabies vaccinations.

Residents should not handle bats, skunks or other wild animals. If a bat or skunk is found down or dead on your property, residents should contact the Cook County Department of Animal Control at (708)974-6140.
If you are exposed to or bitten by a bat, contact your doctor immediately. If you find a bat in your home, please call Orland Park Police Animal Control at (708) 349-4111.
