Sandburg High School Names Next Athletic Director

ORLAND PARK, IL — Carl Sandburg High School will have a new athletic director when the 2020-2021 school year begins. It will be Steve Schanz, who was appointed to the position during a Thursday night virtual meeting of the Consolidated High School District 230 board of education.

Schanz has been the athletic director of Maine East High School in Des Plaines for the past seven years. Before that, he was the head girls basketball coach and a special education teacher in the south suburbs at Oak Forest High School.

He was also the assistant athletic director at Oak Forest, where a District 230 news release indicates he honed his craft while working with their Hall-of-Fame Athletic Director Sue Bonner.

Schanz will replace Tom Freyer in the athletic director role at Sandburg. Fryer, who was named athletic director in 2016, will become the school's next division chair for mathematics and business.
