Seniors Partake In First Outing As COVID-19 Pandemic Subsides
Residents at Alden Estates of Orland Park participated in outdoor activities for the first time in over a year.
ORLAND PARK, IL — After being isolated for over a year, unable to enjoy outdoor, or group activities held prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff at Alden Estates of Orland Park Rehabilitation and Health Care Center took residents out for an old-fashioned fishing outing.
Over Memorial Day weekend, residents and staff went out to Lake Floyd — the pond located on Alden Estates' property. Seniors are the most vulnerable demographic to the coronavirus, and now that things are returning to some sense of normalcy, Alden Estates is looking to add joy to the lives of their residents.
"Our residents have been through a lot this past year, and now that vaccines have rolled out, and we are able to participate in safe and socially-distant activities I wanted to take the residents out for a day of fun and relaxation," said Jeff Mussman, Administrator. “I figured what better way to enjoy a traditional holiday known for food, fun, and outdoor activities than a relaxing fishing trip."

"Now that the season is changing, I’m excited to get the residents out for more safe outdoor activities this summer," Mussman said. "It’s important for seniors to have the ability to participate in the activities they enjoy."
On Dec. 28, the rehabilitation center inoculated a combined total of 90 residents and staff with the Pfizer vaccine. The event was held in partnership with Walgreens. The health care center had sent out a survey to residents, caretakers and staff to ask who would like to get the vaccine, and although it was not mandatory for staff members, the majority of staff and residents were in favor of getting it.
