Sertoma Centre to Kick-off Construction of New Supportive Housing

ORLAND PARK, IL — A ceremony for Sertoma Centre Inc's new supportive housing unit will take place on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 14205 S. Union, Orland Park, according to a news release.

Sertoma Centre Inc. is a nationally accredited, not-for-profit agency that provides services to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities and those living with mental illness, the release states.

According to the release, permanent supportive housing is designed to increase housing opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This multi-family residence will allow adults with disabilities to live independently while receiving personal support through Sertoma’s programs. Residents may receive social support and counseling, job training and placement, and assistance with grocery shopping and bill management, the release states.

Sertoma’s first supportive housing development opened in 2016 and is located in Homewood, IL, according to the release.

Support for this project is being provided by the Illinois Housing Development Authority, Cook County Department of Planning and Development, and The Housing Authority of Cook County. Housing programs like this project support the state’s efforts to remove obstacles to safe and affordable housing to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, according to the release.

The apartment-style complex features 13 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom units, each with its own kitchen, bathroom, and living space. The building will feature a community outdoor patio area, laundry room, secure entry, and on-site support services from Sertoma Centre. The Orland Park location on Union Avenue provides an ideal location due to its proximity to stores, pharmacy, restaurants, parks, recreation facilities, public transportation, and library, according to the release.
