Oakton Students To Sleep Outdoors, Feel Plight Of Homeless
They'll brave the cold in cardboard boxes and other 'shanties,' sleeping on hard concrete to raise awareness of the 14,000 homeless in Illinois every night.

The forecast for Monday night is 44 degrees, but Oakton Community College students will be sleeping outdoors in boxes and other makeshift 'shanties' as they participate in 'Shantytown,' an event to raise awareness of the 14,000 people who are homeless in Illinois on any given night. It will take place at the Skokie campus this year.Β

What:Β Β Β Β Β Every night inΒ Illinois, an estimatedΒ 14,000Β people experience homelessness. To raise awareness about the plight of the homeless,Β OaktonΒ Community Collegeβs Habitat for Humanity Chapter is sponsoring an overnight βShantytown.β More thanΒ 20Β student clubs or individuals will build and spend the night in βshantiesβ (temporary outdoor shelters), outside of the Collegeβs main entrance at theΒ SkokieΒ campus,Β 7701Β NorthΒ Lincoln Avenue.

- Β This year, shanties will be on display OctoberΒ 5Β β 11.
- Β Β Students will spend the night in the shanties betweenΒ 6Β p.m., OctoberΒ 7Β β 7Β a.m., OctoberΒ 8.Β This coincides withΒ World HabitatΒ Day, observed annually worldwide on the firstΒ MondayΒ of October. The day is meant to be a time to reflect on the human right for adequate shelter.

- Β Shanties will be constructed from discarded material at OaktonβsΒ SkokieΒ campus.
- Β·Each group will spend the night in its shanty.
- Β Visitors can βvoteβ for their favorite shanty by placing donations in paint cans outside the shanties betweenΒ 6Β andΒ 9Β p.m. on OctoberΒ 7. Money raised will benefit Habitat for Humanity.
- The Collegeβs Habitat Chapter is also sponsoring a presentation and panel discussion about homelessness fromΒ 6:30Β β 8Β p.m., Monday, OctoberΒ 7Β (Rooms A145-152) at the Skokie campus led byΒ ChicagoΒ authorΒ Karen Skalitzky.Β She will be discussing her bookΒ A Recipe for Hope: Stories of Transformation by People Struggling with Homelessness,Β which challenges modern preconceptions about the destitute people who are without permanent shelter and how this problem affects everyone regardless of race, color, creed, or economic status. The panel will consist of individuals featured in her book. Copies of her book will be available for $10Β with proceeds benefiting the homeless.
