Public Works Snow Fighters Transitioning To Storm Cleanup Efforts

City to provide storm debris cleanup following week of winter weather events.

The city of Peoria Public Works Department is receiving numerous calls and concerns about storm debris on private properties following the past week’s extreme winter weather events.

Ice buildup on trees coupled with light snow accumulation over the weekend has weighed down thousands of limbs and branches across the City and storm crews are now transitioning to cleanup efforts and focusing their work on keeping streets and sidewalks passable.

Let the Cleanup Begin
Residents who have storm debris involving trees, limbs/branches are advised to gather and place them neatly at their curb in the coming days.

Public Works crews will begin collection Friday, January 8 and continue Monday, January 11, giving property owners the next few days of warmer temperatures to begin cleaning up their properties. When possible, the tree debris should be bundled, with sticks and branches being no longer than 5 feet in length and 50 pounds.

This is a continuation of the Department’s mission to ensure streets and sidewalks are safe for residents and visitors. City workers will not go onto private property to remove trees, limbs, branches or any other storm debris. Property owners should contact a private tree removal company for assistance if they are unable to remove trees and associated debris.

· Do not place tree/storm debris in roadways or block sidewalks which creates hazardous conditions

· Public Works will not pick up any other yard waste or anything placed inside a landscape waste bag

· Due to the demand and urgent need for post storm recovery actions, the Department will be directing its full efforts to collecting storm debris

In addition, property owners should note this is a service being provided by the City in response to the extreme weather we received over the past week. The City’s trash hauler, Peoria Disposal Company (PDC) is no longer collecting yard waste for the season and will resume their collection in March.
