Son Fatally Shot, Father Taken Into Custody At Plainfield Preserve

The 19-year-old succumbed to his injuries in the Monday night shooting, according to forest preserve police.

PLAINFIELD, IL — A 56-year-old man was in custody Monday night after authorities said his 19-year-old son was fatally shot at Lake Renwick Preserve – Turtle Lake Access on Lockport Street in Plainfield, according to Forest Preserve District of Will County Police.

Forest preserve police received a 911 call reporting gunshots at the preserve at 7:50 p.m., according to officials, Will County Sheriff's police responded to the scene and found the 19-year-old lying on the ground near a picnic shelter.

Plainfield Fire Protection District paramedics responded, and the victim was taken to Ascension St. Joseph hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The victim's father was taken into custody. The shooting appears to be a domestic incident, and there is no threat to members of the public, said Forest Preserve Police Chief Tracy Chapman.

As of late Tuesday morning, no charges had yet been filed, but a forest preserve spokesperson said officials were meeting with the Will County State's Attorney's Office.

The victim's name is not yet being released, the forest preserve district said.
