SPRINGFIELD, IL — Twp days after Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker called for his resignation, Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell has resigned, effective Aug. 31, according to media reports.

Campbell faced harsh criticism after Deputy Sean Grayson fatally shot mother of two Sonya Massey to death in her home after she called 911 to report an intruder. Grayson now faces charges including first-degree murder in the death of Massey, 36.

Massey was killed on July 6. Grayson has been in custody since his arrest a little over a week later.

Earlier this week, Pritzker said Campbell should step down because "the sheriff has failed." At the time, Campbell responded, saying, "I was overwhelmingly elected to lead the sheriff's office through both good times and bad. I am fully prepared to continue leading my office and serving the residents of Sangamon County through this difficult period, ensuring we learn from this tragedy and work toward a better future."

But two days later, he issued his resignation.

"It has become clear that the current political climate has made it nearly impossible for me to continue effectively in my role," Campbell said in a statement obtained by WGN, adding, "Some individuals would rather see our community divided and in turmoil, than allow me to continue serving as Sheriff."

On July 22, days after Grayson's arrest, Illinois State Police released shocking body camera footage of the moments leading to Massey's death.

Campbell previously apologized as he faced a hostile crowd at a church in Springfield. "I stand here today before you with arms wide open and I ask for your forgiveness," an emotional Campbell said at the time. "I ask Ms. Massey and her family for forgiveness. I offer up no excuses. What I do is offer our attempt to do better, to be better."
