2 Men Charged In Chicago Police Shooting In Montclare
Vincent Paopao and Marion Gadberry are accused of firing on officers last week in an incident that ended in an alley shootout.

CHICAGO, IL — Two men wounded by Chicago police after they allegedly opened fire on officers last week on the Northwest Side have been charged in the shooting. Vincent Papao — 23 and still hospitalized from the incident — was ordered held on $2 million bail, according to jail records. Mario Gadberry, 31, is being held on $1 million bail. The next court date for both men is June 30.
Paopao, of the Avondale neighborhood, was charged with four counts of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault with the discharge of a firearm, two counts of aggravated asault of a police officer with a weapon and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without an FOID card, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Gadberry, of the Roscoe Village neighborhood, was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and felony aggravated fleeing, the report added. The two men are accused of shooting at officers at around 11:54 p.m. June 6 as they were traveling in a gray sedan in the 2900 block of North Newland Avenue, according to police. The shots, however, hit a civilian vehicle, and the officers pursued the alleged shooters, police said.

The car chase ended in a nearby alley, and a shootout broke out, according to police. Paopao, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was hit in the exchange of gunfire with police. Gadberry, the driver, suffered "an impact head injury" during the shooting and not a gunshot wound as initially believed, police said. No officers were hurt in the shooting, but they were taken to Rush University Medical Center as a precaution.

According to police, two weapons were recovered from the scene. The shooting is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, and following department policy, the officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.

This Montclare incident was the fifth police-involved shooting in nearly a month. It also was the fourth time in a four-day period that on-duty Chicago police officers have been fired upon. Here's a rundown of the recent incidents:
- June 5: Three boys — a 12-year-old and two 17-year-olds — are accused of firing shots at Chicago police officers on the Southwest Side. The minors face attempted murder and other felony charges.
- June 3: Dashonn Maggette, 31, was shot and wounded after he allegedly shot an officer in the hand while the two were tussling.
- June 2: Officers shot and killed Corsean Lewis, 17, while responding to a call concerning a man with a gun in the Washington Park neighborhood. Lewis allegedly fired on police in the incident.
- May 24: An officer shot and wounded a driver who allegedly rammed him with his car May 24, pinning him against another vehicle as he tried to flee police on the West Side.
- May 12: Officers were involved in a shooting in which they returned fire after interrupting an alleged drug deal on the West Side. Deangela Eaton, 25, was wounded after she opened fire on two officers, hitting one of them in the chest. Fortunately, the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest, something police officials say saved his life.
