HANOVER PARK, IL — Fire crews found a barrel full of acid abandoned in an industrial park on the corner of Powis Road and Hawthorne Lane Thursday night, officials said. A hazardous materials team from the Hanover Park Fire Department was called to help identify the contents.

West Chicago Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Tim Leidig said fire crews were called to the intersection around 9 p.m. Thursday for an obstruction in the road. When they arrived, a 55-gallon drum was in the path.

A pungent oder from the barrel prompted fire teams to call a hazmat crew. Leidig told Patch a machine analyzed the liquid as some type of acid used in etching and cleaning concrete. The barrel had spilled slightly and crews were able to clean it up though traffic was blocked for several hours.
