Educators “have a responsibility” to highlight the history of Juneteenth, says Superintendent, Dr. Jackson.
"Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas finally received word of their emancipation, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation,” said Dr. Jackson. “As educators, we have a responsibility to teach our students about this important historical event and its significance in the ongoing, unending fight for civil rights."
The Lindop District 92 school board contributed $10,000 to the event, which cost the village $100,000.
The Juneteenth celebration featured a variety of activities, including live music, food vendors, cultural performances, and educational exhibits. The event drew more than 1,000 attendees from Broadview and surrounding communities, according to the mayor.
