Event Marks Triumph for Community Unity, Says Mayor

(Broadview, IL) – Broadview’s 4th annual Juneteenth celebration, held from June 14 to June 16, marked a resounding success, drawing an estimated 5,000 visitors to the west suburban Cook County community over the three-day event, according to village’s top elected official.

Mayor Katrina Thompson expressed her pride in the event’s outcome during the Board of Trustees’ regular meeting on July 3, noting that this year’s celebration surpassed previous attendance records, highlighting the growing significance of Juneteenth and the community’s dedication to honoring its rich cultural heritage.

"Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Black community and our pride in being Black,” said Thompson. “I am proud of being Black and I am proud of the way our village came together to commemorate this important day in our nation’s history."

The mayor also commended the Broadview Police Department for their efforts in maintaining safety throughout the festivities.

"Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of our police officers, the Juneteenth celebration was a peaceful and joyful occasion for everyone involved,” said Thompson. “There were no incidents, no fights, and no arrests, ensuring a secure environment for all attendees."

Special recognition was given to event Village Clerk Kevin McGrier and entertainer Misha Owens a.k.a YASSS Ms. Hunty for their contributions to the event's success.

“Their tireless efforts and passion played a pivotal role in creating a memorable and engaging experience for all who attended,” said Thompson.

The mayor highlighted the collaborative spirit with other Broadview stakeholders that made the event possible.

“The success of this year’s Juneteenth celebration is a testament to the power of community collaboration,” said Thompson. “The Village of Broadview is grateful for the partnership with local organizations such as the Broadview Park District, the Broadview Public Library, Lindop School District 92, and countless residents who worked tirelessly to create a three-day celebration that truly reflected the spirit of Juneteenth."

The celebration showcased the community’s diversity, cultural performances that highlighted the rich traditions of the African Americans, a variety of booths from local businesses, and educational activities that fostered a deeper understanding of Juneteenth’s historical significance.

“This year’s Juneteenth celebration not only commemorated a pivotal moment in our history but also served as a powerful reminder of the strength, unity, and resilience that define our community,” said Thompson. “We look forward to building on this success and creating an even more memorable event next year, which will be our fifth Juneteenth.”
