Broadview Taps Derek Bryant as New Fire Chief

Bryant Brings 25-years of Fire Fighting Experience to Broadview

(Broadview, IL) – The Village of Broadview Board of Trustees this week approved the appointment of Derek Bryant as the village’s new Fire Chief.

Trustees voted unanimously at their regular, January 16 meeting, to install Bryant in the post that has been occupied since June 2023 by Acting Chief Matthew Martin.

"Chief Bryant's qualifications are impeccable," said Mayor Katrina Thompson. "His 25 years of experience, combined with his educational background and commitment to community service, make him the ideal candidate to lead the Broadview Fire Department.”

Bryant has been currently serving as a Station Commander for the City of Calumet City, where he oversees 50 career fire personnel.

Bryant's first responder career began at the age of 15 as a “fire explorer,” showcasing his early interest for public safety. Additionally, he served as a police officer, specializing in juvenile outreach, and later became the Director of Safety & Security for a school district. He holds the distinction of being Calumet City's first African American Firefighter/Paramedic, Engineer, Lieutenant, and Captain. Bryant is a graduate of the Dr. Carl Holmes Executive Fire Officer Program and holds both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Business Administration.

“Derek’s unique combination of fire service expertise and business acumen positions him to strategically lead and manage the Broadview Fire Department,” said Acting Chief Martin. “I welcome Chief Bryant to Broadview and look forward to his leadership in keeping our community safe.”

Mayor has praise for Martin.

"We are grateful for the dedicated service of Acting Chief Matthew Martin during this interim period," Thompson said. "Action Chief Martin has led the department with professionalism and ensured the safety of our community throughout this transition.”

Chief Bryant’s first full day on the job is January 17, 2024.
