Chicago Cops Fatally Shoot Armed Man Who Fired at Officers After Domestic Incident

A Sunday police shooting of an armed man in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood remained under investigation Monday.

CHICAGO - An armed assailant was shot and killed by police on the city's West Side over the weekend in an incident that remained under investigation on Monday.

It started shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 9, when a woman sought officers' help in the Chicago Police Department's 25th District Police Station, 5555 W. Grand Ave., according to a department news release. She told police that a family member was armed inside a residence in the 2700 block of North LeClaire Avenue in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood.

"Officers assigned to the 25th District, including CIT trained Officers, relocated to the home and upon arrival, the offender exited the residence and fired a single shot at responding officers," the release said. "The offender fled the scene into a gangway on the 5000 block of West Wolfram where he again fired at the police."

A SWAT team was called to assist in detaining the armed man, police said. But the suspect was, "engaged" by 25th District police, who ultimately shot him. On-scene officers called paramedics and the suspect was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he died of his gunshot wounds. No police officers were injured in the ordeal.

"Currently, the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation are being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department," the release said. "The officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days."
