Human Head Found In Box On Chicago's Near West Side, Detectives Investigate

CHICAGO — Chicago police are investigating after a human head was found in a box on the sidewalk Thursday evening on the Near West Side.

Officers were called to the 2600 block of West Taylor Street at shortly before 6 p.m., authorities said.

A 911 caller reported they were walking their dog in the area when they discovered an open box containing what appeared to be human remains that authorities later confirmed to be a severed head.

The immediate area surrounding the discovery consists of primarily industrial buildings near railroad tracks that is regularly used as a dumping ground for trash.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has not identified the victim, and Chicago police detectives are leading a homicide investigation.

The witness who first discovered the severed said they initially hoped that it was a Halloween decoration, WMAQ reported.

This incident follows another discovery of skeletal remains earlier in the week off the Kennedy Expressway. Authorities are working to determine any possible connections between the two cases.
