SWAT Standoff Follows Shooting In Humboldt Park (VIDEO)

UPDATED: An hourslong incident Thursday ended with no one in custody after a SWAT team searched a house for a shooting suspect.

CHICAGO, IL — A SWAT team was called in Thursday afternoon to help deal with a standoff following a shooting on the West Side, according to reports. A 19-year-old man was shot at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 27, near Chicago and Lawndale avenues in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, and Chicago police originally said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later said he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was in critical condition on life-support.

According to police, a gunman approached the teen and shot him in the face as he was walking in the area, the Chicago Tribune reports. Authorities told NBC 5 Chicago that an individual was barricaded inside a nearby home in the 500 block of North Hamlin Avenue. Two Chicago SWAT trucks were on the scene and moving into positions at around 4:30 p.m. Residents were on their porches and holding block parties within a block of police tape throughout the afternoon. Members of the Chicago Fire Department also were at the scene at around 3 p.m. to help police with the situation, the Tribune reports.

At just after 5 p.m., police announced over a loudspeaker that the house was surrounded. The standoff was happening about four blocks from the scene of the fatal shooting. That area was cordoned off with red police tape.

A resident in the neighborhood of the standoff said a woman chased a possible suspect in the shooting into the home, and she was pounding on the door before police arrived.

Police finally searched the house at around 7 p.m., and no one was found inside, the Tribune reports.
