Suspect Accused of Carjacking Off-Duty Trooper’s Car in Custody: Cops

A brief standoff ensued on the West Side of Chicago Saturday night after a man took a trooper's weapon. This report is developing.

CHICAGO, IL — Update, 9:36 p.m. Saturday -- An 18-year-old man alleged to be involved in carjacking an Illinois State trooper’s car surrendered to Chicago police Saturday night after holing up in a residence in the 4200 block of West 16th Street.

The Cicero Police Department said in a written statement that the trooper’s vehicle was reported carjacked on Monday by three men near 18th Street and 51st Court last Monday. Cicero police said they were able to apprehend two of them after a foot chase after the alleged carjacking occurred.

The third suspect was tracked to his home near 16th Street and Keeler Avenue in Chicago on Saturday.Cicero police, along with the Illinois State Police and CPD officers surrounded the home. The suspect was inside with his mother and another relative. Both the mother and the relative exited the home.

The suspect, who is 18 years old, surrendered to police shortly after. The gun and vehicle have been recovered, the police statement said.

At about 7:30 p.m., CPD SWAT arrived on the scene at 16th Street and Keeler Avenue in North Lawndale. The incident reportedly began around 6:30 p.m. but the circumstances at this point are not clear.

As of 8:30 p.m., witnesses said at least one man was in custody.
