“Of course, I am honored by the election to such a key committee of the National League of Cities,” said Chao-Malavé. “As a trustee on an all-women board of trustees, including the mayor, in a racially diverse community, I bring the unique perspective and experience of a local government adopting transformational, innovative, and long-term change that seeks to uplift communities previously ignored.”

As a member of National League of Cities Human Development committee, Chao-Malavé will play a key role in shaping the organization’s policy positions and advocate on behalf of America’s cities, towns, and villages before Congress, with the administration, and at home in Illinois.

“NLC’s federal advocacy committees are a key tool for gathering insights directly from the communities that our members serve,” said NLC President Mayor Victoria Woodards of Tacoma, Washington. “I am excited to have Broadview Trustee Chao-Malavé serve on the Human Development committee and look forward to working with her to ensure every city, town and village in this nation has the resources they need to thrive.”

The Human Development committee addresses issues involving social services, children and learning, poverty and income support, employment and workforce development, equal opportunity, education, Social Security and seniors, individuals with disabilities, public health care, mental health parity, and immigration reform.

“As one of the hardest working members of the Board of Trustees, Trustee Chao-Malavé is deserving of the appointment to the National League of Cities’ Human Development committee,” said Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson. “And Trustee Chao-Malavé’s appointment also further elevates Broadview’s profile on a national stage and reflects the respect accorded to Broadview’s achievements far beyond our municipal boarders.”

The leadership of this year’s committee will consist of Chair Steve Williams, Mayor of Huntington, WV; Vice Chair Adriana Rocha Garcia, Councilmember, San Antonio, TX; and Vice Chair Doreen Garlid, Councilmember, Tempe, AZ.
