Body Found By Boater In Lake Michigan Near Wilmette

Investigators believe the unidentified body was in the lake for at least two weeks.

WILMETTE, IL — An unidentified body was pulled out of Lake Michigan Sunday after a boater spotted it floating about a mile off the Wilmette shoreline, authorities said.

Wilmette police and fire crews were dispatched to the lakefront around 4:15 p.m. for the reported human remains.

Water rescuers from the Wilmette Fire Department recovered the body with the help of U.S. Coast Guard staff, according to Wilmette police.

The dead body appears to be a man or a boy. He is about 6 feet tall, has black hair and his race could not be determined, police said.

The preliminary findings of the death investigation suggest that the body had been in the water for "at least a couple of weeks," according to a statement from Wilmette police.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, which conducted an autopsy Monday, has not determined the cause or manner of the person's death.

Wilmette police said there are no active missing persons cases in the village and said anyone with information about the incident may call their department at 847-256-1200.
