Andrea Friederici Ross breathes new life into the fascinating stories of Zina, Amy, and Rose Fay, intertwining their narratives into a captivating family biography. 
Andrea Friederici Ross is the author of Edith: The Rogue Rockefeller McCormick and Let the Lions Roar! The Evolution of Brookfield Zoo. She has worked as the operations manager of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, assistant to the director of the Chicago Zoological Society, and at her local public school library.

Tuesday, January 13 at 7:00 pm as they host bestselling creator Kadir Nelson for a discussion featuring his new picture book, Basket Ball: The Story of the All-American Game. The award-winning author and illustrator delivers the perfect gift for basketball fans of any age—a beautifully illustrated history of the game and its key players over the years. The sage voice of an elder player narrates the journey from the early days of the slow game of “basket ball” to today’s dazzlingly athletic and fast-paced sport. This book is perfect for kids ages 8 to 12.
Kadir Nelson is the illustrator of many books for young readers, including the Caldecott Medal winner The Undefeated, written by Kwame Alexander; the New York Times bestseller We Are the Ship, winner of the Coretta Scott King Author Award and Illustrator Honor as well as the Sibert Medal; and Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom, written by Carole Boston Weatherford, which was an NAACP Image Award winner, Caldecott Honor Book, and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award winner. His work has appeared in many publications, including Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, and The New Yorker. Kadir’s original paintings are in the permanent collections of the US House of Representatives and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and National Museum of African American History and Culture, and he has been inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. Basket Ball: An Evening with Kadir Nelson at Glenview Public Library

The Book Stall is delighted to host a discussion illuminating the importance of breadfruit, a superfood gaining national attention. Mike McLaughlin, co-founder of Trees That Feed Foundation, will lead the discussion with Dr. Russell Fielding, author of Breadfruit: Three Global Journeys of a Bountiful Tree, recently published by Columbia University Press.
The event will take place on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at The Book Stall, located at 811 Elm Street, Winnetka.
About the Book
In Breadfruit: Three Global Journeys of a Bountiful Tree, Fielding weaves together science, history, and cultural anthropology to trace how the humble breadfruit tree has traveled across the world — from its roots in Southeast Asia, across the Pacific, to the Caribbean, and now to new regions — becoming a vital symbol of food security, ecological resilience, and sustainable agriculture.
That third “journey” Fielding describes is the work of Winnetka-based Trees That Feed Foundation. Founded by Mary and Mike McLaughlin in 2008, the nonprofit has planted close to half a million food bearing trees in 23 countries. Breadfruit is their flagship tree.
Special Support: Giving Back to Trees That Feed Foundation
In support of Trees That Feed Foundation’s mission to plant food bearing trees for food, jobs, and the environment, The Book Stall will donate 10% of all proceeds from book sales at the event directly to the organization. This gives attendees a chance to support global food justice simply by purchasing the book at the event.
What to Expect at the Event
- A moderated conversation: Mike McLaughlin will engage Russell Fielding in a deep, thoughtful discussion about breadfruit’s journey, its cultural and ecological significance, and what it means for global nutrition and sustainability.
- Exploration of how the themes and research in Breadfruit: Three Global Journeys of a Bountiful Tree connect with TTFF’s real‑world work planting trees, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agribusiness worldwide.
- Opportunity for attendees to sample crackers made from breadfruit flour, thanks to Courtney Mills, founder of Ulu Foods in Barbados, and to purchase the book on-site.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Philippe Quint and celebrated pianist Jessica Choe join Rembrandt Chamber Musicians for an unforgettable evening of French and Swiss masterworks. The program opens with Bloch’s evocative Three Nocturnes for piano trio, followed by Debussy’s sensual and spirited Violin Sonata in G minor. The concert culminates in Chausson’s richly expressive Concert for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, a tour de force of Romantic color and intensity.

The Book Stall (811 Elm Street in Winnetka) welcomes local author and retired surgeon Dr. Allen Saxon to the store on Thursday, January 22 at 6:00 pm for a discussion featuring his new novel, Training in Charity, which captures what it meant to begin a life in medicine before computers and technology softened the edges—a time when skill was learned by doing and compassion was earned at the bedside. Dr. Saxon will be in-conversation with Steve Fiffer.
Since retiring as a general surgeon, Allen Saxon, MD, has had time to pursue two of his passions—creative writing and medical education. A graduate of Tulane Medical School, he has experienced the value of safety net hospitals to society first-hand, both to indigent populations and to those learning the art of medicine. He currently teaches at two medical schools: Northwestern University and Rosalind Franklin University. His novella, The Climber of Pointe du Hoc, was published in 2024. He lives in the Chicago area. 
Steve Fiffer is a New York Times best-selling author whose books include his memoir Three Quarters, Two Dimes, and a Nickel, Jimmie Lee and James, and The Moment. The winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship, he is a graduate of Yale and the University of Chicago Law School.

The Book Stall (811 Elm Street in Winnetka) welcomes Keith Burton to the store on January 28 at 6:30 pm for a discussion of his new memoir, Shadows of Sobriety: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Healing a Family Legacy. This inspiring memoir explores the lifelong effects of growing up in a dysfunctional family, while providing hope that no matter the circumstances, healing is always possible. Mr. Burton will be in-conversation with his colleague, Roni Moore. 
Keith Burton is an award-winning public relations leader, journalist, and co-producer of the acclaimed documentary Dax’s Case, which explores ethical dilemmas and patient autonomy in the right-to-die debate. As founder of Grayson Emmett Partners, a Chicago-based leadership consultancy, Keith has spent more than four decades advising Fortune 500 companies and leading major public relations agencies around the world. A frequent lecturer on leadership and communications, Keith serves on the Public Relations Advisory Board at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and is a past chair of The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations.
Keith’s new memoir, Shadows of Sobriety: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Healing a Family Legacy, explores his family’s struggles with alcoholism and the lifelong pursuit of resilience, faith, and redemption.
