Change Is Coming To Winnetka Recycling Program

The Village of Winnetka is shifting the way it collects hard-to-recycle items.

WINNETKA, IL — Winnetka is changing the way it collects hard-to-recycle items like styrofoam through Hefty's ReNew Program.

The Hefty program allows residents to get rid of plastics like, candy wrappers, pet food bags and foam to-go boxes. To participate, purchase the program's orange garbage bags from a participating retailer and throw it away in the regular recycling bin.

The village's recycling contractor, Lakeshore Recycling, will sort the garbage bags and send them to the correct recycler at their facility.

With the shift in collection and uncertainty about the recycler's capacity to accept more product, the village's drop off program will be discontinued. Residents will be encouraged to join the Heft program after Jan. 1, 2026.

Large amounts of styrofoam can be taken to ABT in Glenview or to Mount Prospect Public Works.
