Christmas Tree Recycling Underway In Winnetka, Glencoe

Village officials reminded residents to remove all decorations before dropping off their holiday trees in front of their homes.

WINNETKA-GLENCOE, IL — Whether or not they are ready for the end of the holiday season, Glencoe and Winnetka residents looking to recycle their Christmas trees are on the clock.

In Winnetka, starting Tuesday morning and continuing until 7 a.m. Jan. 16, Christmas trees will be collected from curbs around the village to be shredded, chipped and composted.

Yard waste in bags will also be collected until Jan. 16, after which a special refuse yard waste sticker will be required.

In Glencoe, holiday tree collection will be handled by Lakeshore Recycling Systems on Wednesdays through the end of January.

Village staff asked people to place their trees on the parkway behind the curb for pickup.

Both towns' tree disposal plans are part of their efforts to promote environmentally responsible practices for the holiday season.

And representatives of both towns reminded residents to remove all lights, ornaments, wraps, wires, garland, plastic bags and any other flotsam from their trees.

Holiday lights can be recycled year-round during business hours in Winnetka at the drop-off location at the village's public works building, 1390 Willow Road.

In Glencoe, holiday lights will be accepted for recycling during Wednesdays through the end of January. Lights can also be dropped out at the public works building at 320 Hazel Ave. through April 1.
