A memorial service for the longtime Glencoe resident will be held this fall.

Betty had lived in the Chicago area for over 60 years, but remained a Southerner at heart. She was born in Columbus, Georgia where she has a sister and brother-in-law whom she loved dearly. She received her undergraduate degree from Tulane and then forged northward, attending the University of Chicago. She was generous and gracious and overflowed with Southern hospitality. She was involved in community organizations, worked as a social worker, and became a college counselor. She was an enthusiastic member of the Hummers and Strummers. For all her accomplishments, nothing held a candle to her love for her husband, Stanley, her knight in shining armor, as she called him; the man she became engaged to six weeks after they met. She also poured her love and devotion into her children, John and Beth, and her grandchildren, Simon and Kira, who brought her abundant joy and excitement for the future.

Donations in Betty’s honor can go to two of her favorite charities: Little Brothers of the Poor and the Southern Poverty Law Center. A memorial service will be held later in the fall.
