Iconic 'Home Alone' House Listed For $5.25M
The Winnetka cinematic landmark, significantly expanded since it last sold 12 years ago, remains "largely unchanged in form and structure."
WINNETKA, IL — The Winnetka house made famous in the film "Home Alone" has been listed for sale for only the second time since the release of the 1990 holiday classic.
The Georgian-style home at 671 Lincoln Ave., last sold 12 years ago for just under $1.6 million, hit the market Friday with a $5.25 million listing price.
Originally built in 1921, the 9,126-square-foot property includes six bathrooms, five bedrooms, four fireplaces and various luxury amenities, among them indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a basketball court and a home theater.

The house gained cinematic fame when it appeared as the McCallister family residence, where Macaulay Culkin's character, Kevin McCallister, famously fended off burglars and sledded down a staircase.
"Home Alone," which was written and produced by North Shore native John Hughes, filmed at the Winnetka house for about four months. Since then, it has attracted a steady stream of tourists looking to snap selfies and catch a glimpse of the location.

The owners undertook a significant renovation of the house in 2018, adding an "expansive addition" with a new family room and other upgrades.
"The gracious foyer and unforgettable entry staircase, as well as the formal living and dining room spaces, all remain largely unchanged in form and structure," according to the listing from Coldwell Banker Realty’s Dawn McKenna Group.
Gone is the home's patterned wallpaper, to be replaced by an all-white look with dark hardwood flooring. Also removed: the carpeting on the staircase, making it significantly dicier to attempt to slide down.
Its current kitchen includes double islands, bespoke cabinetry, an eight-burner range, an integrated refrigerator and a hidden pantry, according to the listing. Adjacent to the kitchen is a second family room, a screened-in porch and a large patio area overlooking the large backyard on the property's half-acre lot.
The master bedroom has a marble spa bath with a freestanding tub, while the top floor has been converted from an attic to a "magnificent treetop escape," now set up as a junior primary suite with en-suite bath, the listing said.
“This home is a legend in so many ways, often referred to as a character in the film, and it still lives up to its hype,” Dawn McKenna said in a statement. “It has a quintessential Georgian architecture, manicured lawns and landscaping with a modern layout and amenities and is perfect for someone that wants a classic and iconic feel with all the finishes you would expect in a modern luxury home.”
The lower level of the home includes a full bath, a recreation space with wet bar, a movie theater and an indoor sports court with a full 3-point line, according to the listing.
During the filming, the Lincoln Avenue mansion was the home of the Abendshien family, who said years later that they had never expected the stream of sightseers that made the trek out to Winnetka to get a glimpse of the house.
As part of an Airbnb promotional campaign in 2021, up to four fans of “Home Alone” were permitted to spend one night at the McCallister family home. The actor Devin Ratray, who portrayed Kevin’s brother, Buzz, in the film, welcomed guests into the house.
“It's rare to find a fully renovated vintage home of this size and caliber, on over a half-acre lot, in this ideal location in East Winnetka," listing agent Katie Moor said. “Adding to the uniqueness, the sport court, with its regulation three-point line, is state of the art and unlike any other we have seen in a private residence in Winnetka. It's truly that rare jewel of a property as it was described in the movie.”
