Labor Day In Winnetka And Glencoe: What's Closed?
Monday, Sept. 1, is Labor Day, with people being treated to one last long weekend of summer.
WINNETKA-GLENCOE, IL — With summer's unofficial end coming this weekend, folks have one more day of relaxation on Monday, Sept. 1, Labor Day.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September.
It is an "annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers," wrote federal authorities.

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," wrote federal officials.
There will be several impacts on municipal services in Winnetka and Glencoe due to the holiday. Here's a roundup of what's closed and what'll be open:

Schools: All schools will be closed for the day, a week after most students had their first day of school.
Local Government: Village Hall and village, county, state and federal government offices will be closed.
Banks: Most financial institutions will be closed.
Libraries: The Winnetka and Glencoe public libraries will be closed Sunday and Monday.
Shopping: Most big-box retailers will be open — and many are offering Labor Day deals — but smaller businesses might be closed, so it's a good idea to call ahead.
Trash pickup: Refuse and recycling services in both villages will shift one day, with Monday collection happening on Tuesday and so forth.
Labor Day on Metra:
- Metra offers a $7 Saturday/Sunday/Holiday pass that is good for unlimited rides for one day. The $10 weekend pass is only good for Saturday and Sunday and is not valid on the third day of three-day weekends. A separate holiday pass must be purchased for Monday.
- Through Labor Day, up to three kids ages 11-years-old and younger can ride free with any fare-paying adult.
