Winnetka, IL — The Volunteer Center is excited to announce its 22nd annual Make A Difference Day, taking place on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 9 AM to 12 PM at the Indian Hill Train Station in Winnetka. This beloved community event continues to grow each year, offering residents a chance to declutter their homes while giving back to those in need. Participants are encouraged to donate gently used goods to support 14 local nonprofits that provide essential services to individuals and families throughout the region.
This year, as we continue to recover from the challenges posed by recent economic uncertainty, the need for community support is stronger than ever. By donating, community members will directly help nonprofit organizations continue their vital work, whether it's providing warm clothing for the winter months, basic supplies for children, or recreational and educational materials for those facing hardship.
Residents of New Trier Township and beyond are encouraged to start gathering their goods now, focusing on the specific items requested by the participating organizations. Each nonprofit has carefully outlined its needs, ranging from children’s clothing and educational toys to adult bikes, men’s and women’s clothing, pet supplies, and even musical instruments. This targeted approach ensures that donations go directly to those who need them most and helps nonprofits address immediate gaps in their resources.
In addition to the opportunity to declutter while making a difference, participants will have the chance to learn more about the impact their donations have. Volunteers from each nonprofit will be available on-site to share stories of the individuals and families they serve, fostering a deeper connection between donors and recipients. This hands-on, community-driven event serves as a reminder of how small acts of kindness can ripple out and create positive change.
Items will be collected at the Indian Hill Train Station, located at 111 Green Bay Road (corner of Green Bay & Winnetka Ave). Donors are asked to kindly sort, bag, and label their donations by nonprofit before drop-off to help streamline the process. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with unloading and ensure donations are properly directed to the respective organizations.
The following nonprofits will be accepting donations this year:
- Binary Heart: Computers, iPhones, iPads, and more.
- Books4Cause: Gently used books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl.
- Connections for the Homeless: Men’s coats, gym shoes, jeans, t-shirts, backpacks, and more.
- Salvation Army: Sports equipment.
- Share Our Spare: Infant and toddler clothing, diapers, formula, and baby food.
And many more! For the full list of items and organizations, please visit VolunteerCenterHelps.org.
"Make A Difference Day is a great opportunity for our community to come together, upcycle unused items, and support local nonprofits that help those in need," said Bridget Lewis, Executive Director of The Volunteer Center. "We’re proud to see this event grow each year, and we encourage everyone to participate by gathering their donations and bringing them to Indian Hill Train Station. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a lasting difference in someone's life."
