A Night with Waukegan’s Finest: A Congressional Candidate Perspective

I am more committed than ever to supporting our law enforcement officers and ensuring they have the resources and respect they deserve.

As a congressional candidate for Illinois’ 10th District, I am committed to understanding the challenges and needs of our community. My platform is built on the pillars of economic prosperity, national security, and enhanced public safety. However, it’s one thing to advocate for these principles and another to see the realities that shape them. That’s why I was honored to participate in a ridealong with the Waukegan Police Department on Friday, August 9, to witness firsthand the daily experiences of our law enforcement officers.

In just one evening shift, I witnessed the multifaceted role our officers play. They are not just protectors from criminal activity—a daunting task in itself—but also community liaisons, peacemakers, and social workers in some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching circumstances. The weight of their responsibilities is staggering, and yet, they carry it with a level of professionalism and compassion that few of us could sustain.

Throughout the night, I saw officers engage in everything from community outreach to crisis intervention. They showed kindness to children and their families, many of whom they knew by name, and provided care and concern to those who were injured. I witnessed their swift response to a “shots fired” call, a moment that highlighted the unpredictability and danger they face daily. Despite the tension, every officer I interacted with treated those that they encountered—whether it was a man injured in a bike accident, a woman in distress after a domestic dispute, or a belligerent drunk at the casino—with respect, care, and a genuine sense of duty to the community.

One situation stands out: we encountered two cars with headlights on in an isolated area near the beach. My officer instructed me to stay back as he approached with calmness and confidence, ready for any outcome. As the cars turned off their lights and shadows moved in the trees, I couldn’t help but feel concern for our safety. Thankfully, it was just a family seeking a quiet swim, but the potential for danger was real, and the officer’s resolve to protect Waukegan was unwavering.

I also saw the devastating effects of substance abuse and mental health issues. Yet, in every case, officers treated those involved with dignity and a strategy of de-escalation, seeing beyond the chaos to the people in need.

Our law enforcement officers face heartbreak and danger daily, often in ways most of us will never experience. Yet, they continue to protect and serve with unwavering dedication. Friday night, I had the privilege of spending time with true heroes. I am deeply grateful for their service and will carry the lessons I learned that night with me always. As a candidate and a citizen, I am more committed than ever to supporting our law enforcement officers and ensuring they have the resources and respect they deserve.
