"I never imagined what an impact it would have on us," shared best-selling writer/author Lynn Sanders of Winnetka. "That's why I wanted to write about our experiences and share it in a children's book."

That book is Adventures In Ecuador: Diary of a Volunteer, a best-seller on Amazon. It's beautifully illustrated, and also contains Spanish phrases and photographs of the Sanders family during their Ecuador volunteering adventures.

"We volunteered over three summers with the nonprofit Causes For Change International, and the experience made such a difference in all of our lives. We learned we could do more than we ever imagined, and we also experienced so much joy in giving. The people we met were wonderful!"

Lynn's husband, Joel, volunteered to provide dentistry at the most basic level -- doing extractions for those in need.

Their son, Andrew, distributed toothbrushes and taught children how to brush their teeth. He also distributed small stuffed animals as gifts to the children, and assisted his dad by shining a flashlight over the mouths of the patients. There was no electricity nearby.

Lynn served as the musical entertainer with a borrowed guitar, teaching songs and games while everyone waited outside in the 90+ degree heat for their dental exam.

"Even though we worked very hard, it was very uplifting," said Lynn. "We got so much energy from helping others."

Over time, Lynn realized how much the volunteer experience affected them all.

"When you take on a challenge, you'd be surprised at how much you can do," admitted Lynn. She was given the task of collecting 1000 tiny stuffed animals (beanie babies) before their trip. Since these children in Ecuador didn't have toys, the idea of receiving a gift would encourage the children to overcome any fears in receiving dental care. Once her family agreed to collect the toys, Lynn was grateful to get so much community support. With the help of many people, they gathered 1800 toys!

Why is Adventures In Ecuador: Diary of a Volunteer a special story for children?

"It's written from a child's perspective," said Lynn, "and my son Andrew helped me in writing this book. He didn't want to take credit for his participation, so I'm letting you know how much it meant to have him involved on this project. His influence offers children an insight into what it's like to live in another country."

This story offers kids an understanding of what it's like to give from one's heart, and how many things we take for granted. Most of all, children will appreciate that at any age, they can make a difference in the lives of others.

Limited copies are now available at Winnetka's Bookstall. A perfect gift for the holidays!
