Indiana Winter Weather Safety: Drivers, Animals, Residents

Are you fully prepared? Check these lists and tips from IDHS.

ACROSS INDIANA — Another weekend winter storm is at the center of the state's forecast, including central Indiana. Therefore, Indiana Department of Homeland Security and local law enforcement want you to stay safe by being prepared for the snow and cold temperatures. A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through late Saturday night and includes Hamilton County among several others, the National Weather Service reports. Expect a mix of snow and freezing rain across central Indiana.

  • First and foremost, DHS advises all Hoosiers to monitor weather via local news (Patch has all up to date weather information), cell phone, or radio.
  • Bring your pets indoors. Provide them with a warm, solid shelter to protect them from wind, snow and ice during winter storms and cold weather. If you are not able to bring them indoors, or are concerned for the safety of an animal you can call the Mayors Action Center at 317-327-4622.   • Before leaving, check weather reports on local news stations and check the county travel status map.
  • Drive well below the posted speed limit and leave plenty of room between cars.
  • Stay attentive and reduce speeds during times of limited visibility.
  • Do not tailgate or try to pass snowplows.
  • Allow for more braking time on slick and snowy roads.
  • Take it slow when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady areas in case of black ice.
  • Share the planned destination, route and expected arrival time with someone.
  • Keep windows, mirrors, headlights, taillights and brake lights clear of snow and ice.

Driving when weather conditions are poor can be dangerous, DHS said, so stock up on these items in case an of an emergency.

  • Portable phone charger
  • Extra blankets or a sleeping bag
  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Ice scraper and snow brush
  • Bag of sand
  • Non-perishable food
  • Water
  • Spare clothes, mittens, scarves, hats
  • Shovel
